Crystal Distribution Services, Inc.
When Rath Packing Company closed its Waterloo operations in the early 1980's,
they left behind a large brownfield site in the heart of the city. The site
proved to be a great challenge to redevelop. INRCOG, on behalf of the City
of Waterloo, applied for and administered a $750,000 award from the U.S. Department
of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA) to clear and spruce
up the area and make it attractive for reuse. This work made it possible for
Crystal Distribution Services, Inc., to expand. EDA's investment leveraged,
among other things, a $6 million investment by Crystal, and led to the creation
of 50 new jobs. The company was given access to more land and constructed
a 70,000 sq. ft. addition to its Sycamore Street complex for sub-zero freezer
space, a USDA approved meat processing area, and new offices. The project
has been good for business, enabling Crystal to attract bigger customers with
its expanded services and improved truck access.
